Surviving The Aviation Job Search

Conducting an aviation job search can be a very confusing and grueling task. I remember when I was looking for a “good” aviation job back in 1988 that I had no idea where to turn first. It became very evident that my aviation job search was going to take me out of state. I think that’s the first thing that you need to come to terms with in your mind; are you willing to move out of your local area for the right aviation job?

I remember turning to “Trade-A-Plane” and looking in their employment section. I got lucky, as the job that I wanted was actually right there in “Trade-A-Plane”. The only downside to that job was the fact that I would have to be based out of Omaha, Nebraska. Not my first choice of where I wanted to go, but I decided to take the job and make the most out of it. I got to fly twin engine Aero Commanders mostly single pilot, IFR at night, so the experience was invaluable, not to mention the three engine failures I had to deal with.

If I had to conduct an aviation job search today, I would seriously consider a subscription to one of the several job listing newsletters out there today. If you are not willing to put forth the effort to obtain the information they sell, then you need to be willing to pay for it. Of course, this assumes that you don’t have a phone book full of names and addresses of chief pilots you’ve met during your present aviation career. Obviously, making contact with everyone you know involved in aviation telling them that you are in the market for a job is a very important step to take in the aviation job search.

Right now, the major airlines are hiring, but it is not an ideal environment. Wages have never been lower, and benefits are becoming non-existent, especially the ones the company pays for. More and more pilots are looking to corporate and charter operations for their next career move. Some are even leaving the country to go and fly for higher compensation in far away places. You may even consider putting together your own company to offer your piloting services in your area of expertise. There are pilots out there that make a living delivering airplanes between the United States and every other place imaginable all over the world.

Having a pilot’s license is something that only 600,000 other people in the USA can say they have. Earning a living with your pilot’s license is almost harder to accomplish than getting the license in the first place. Sometimes, it seems that all 600,000 licensed pilots are going after the one job you really want.

Consider all the resources available to you and make good use of them. Keep your goals in the front of your mind and every day do something that gets you closer to your aviation career goals.
